The Sea-Level Changes in Hong Kong From Tide-Gauge Records and Remote Sensing Observations Over the Last Seven Decades

چکیده

The importance of studying the sea-level change (SLC) in Hong Kong (HK) is emphasized by factors related to high population density, intensive urban, and industrial development, particularly along coast that involves a considerable landreclamation. To address this issue, we investigate spatiotemporal characteristics SLC HK territories analyzing tide-gauge (TG) records collected from 1954 2019 satellite-altimetry (SA) data 1993 2019. application ocean-tide inverted barometer corrections TG substantially decreased uncertaintie achieving submillimeter accuracy. rates detected at six stations vary significantly even within relatively small coastline. According our estimates, annual between 0.32 ± 0.51 4.19 0.46 mm/yr 1997 These large differences are different patterns ocean currents freshwater discharge Pearl River Estuary. empirical orthogonal function analysis confirms expected increasing rising with two anomalous periods during 2002-2003 2015-2016 likely attributed El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). SLCs positively correlated ENSO index precedes several months (normally 5 months) interannual SLC. GPS trends reveals prevailing subsidence territories, which aggravates relative estimates. Between 2019, absolute sea level raised rate 3.17 1.56 (when using GPS+TG) 2.88 0.59 SA observations).

Sea Level Change in Hong Kong from Tide Gauge Records

The results from the study indicate that there is a rising trend of 1.9±0.4 mm per year in the sea level of Hong Kong. The effect of local atmospheric pressure variations on the amplitude of the annual sea level change is about 30% of the amplitude. It is also found that the interannual variations in the sea level of Hong Kong are related to El Nino and La Nina events that occur frequently in t...

Are Long Tide Gauge Records in the Wrong Place to Measure Global Mean Sea Level Rise?

Ocean dynamics, land motion, and changes in Earth’s gravitational and rotational fields cause local sea level change to deviate from the rate of global mean sea level rise. Here we use observations and simulations of spatial structure in sea level change to estimate the likelihood that these processes cause sea level trends in the longest and highest-quality tide gauge records to be systematica...

Observation of increases in emission from modern vehicles over time in Hong Kong using remote sensing.

In this study on-road gaseous emissions of vehicles are investigated using remote sensing measurements collected over three different periods. The results show that a high percentage of gaseous pollutants were emitted from a small percentage of vehicles. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicles generally have higher gaseous emissions compared to other vehicles, particularly among higher-emitting ...

Investigation of periodic changes of the Oman Sea coastline using remote sensing data and spatial analysis

Extended abstract   1- Introduction Coastal environments are one of the most sensitive environmental systems under the influence of dominant hydrodynamic processes. Coastal changes and evolution are occurring very fast. Coastal areas are now gradually becoming known as severe natural and man-made disturbances, including sea levels rising, coastal erosion and sedimentation, and over-exploitat...

Sea Level Changes Along Global Coasts from Satellite Altimetry, GPS and Tide Gauge

The average global sea level was rising through the 20th century as a result of global warming [8, 9, 26]. The Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated that between 1901 and 2010, the mean sea level rate 1.7±0.2 mm/yr and increased to 3.2±0.4 mm/yr between 1993 and 2010, and projected that in 2100 the largest increase in global average sea level ...
